We give strong evidence that the linear sigma model at small external momenta is an effective theory for the leading logarithms of chiral perturbation theory. Based on this evidence an attempt is made to sum the leading logarithms of chiral perturbation theory to all orders. We illustrate why this summation nonetheless fails when one uses standard renormalization group techniques of renormalizable quantum field theories.
