The rate of diphoton production is calculated from a quark–gluon plasma and compared with the rate from hadronic matter. Background diphotons are identified and quantified, including effects from hadronic form factors. Robust thermometry and spectroscopy are shown to be possible owing to the structure of the expected invariant mass spectrum. Charmonium could also be probed with diphotons.
