Measurement of the proton structure function F ₂ in QED Compton scattering at HERA

Abstract

QED Compton scattering at HERA is proposed for a measurement of the proton structure function F ₂ at low momentum transfers Q ². It is shown that the analysis of inelastic QED Compton events allows the extension of present HERA structure function measurements to a kinematic domain, which up to now was only accessed in fixed target data. Preliminary results of such a measurement performed by the H1 Collaboration are presented. The results are in good agreement with the measurements from fixed target experiments wherever they overlap.
