The CMS Tracker consists of three layers of silicon pixel detectors, surrounded by some 220m2 of silicon strip sensors. It is designed to operate reliably in a harsh radiation environment for at least a decade, and to provide accurate and robust tracking in a high occupancy situation. We briefly discuss the layout of the CMS Tracker, and the basic design considerations from which it was derived. We then review the status of the project, with a focus on module assembly. Finally, we highlight a few aspects of the expected tracking performance.
